Enrollment and Attendance FAQs

Any student in grades K–12 who resides in Utah and meets the age requirements is eligible for full-time enrollment. State law requires a student to be at least five years old and no more than 17 years old on or before September 1 to be eligible for the current school year. The special education program is open to students no more than 21 years old on or before September 1 and who have not passed the eleventh grade.

Students in grades 6–12 may also be eligible for part-time enrollment through the Statewide Online Education Program (SOEP) if they are currently attending either a public school within their resident district, a private school, a state-approved charter school, or are homeschooled.

Per UTVA’s charter, the school can have a total enrollment of 2,050 students based on the following allotments:

• Kindergarten: 150 enrollments
• Grades 1–6: 900 enrollments
• Grades 7–8: 300 enrollments
• Grades 9–12: 700 enrollments

As part of the Utah Statewide Online Education Program (SOEP), also known as our part-time option, students in grades 6–12 attending a local district school, approved charter school, private school, or homeschool can take up to six tuition-free credit-bearing online courses with UTVA using the K12 curriculum. See the Part-Time SOEP Courses page for more information. Outside of the SOEP, students in grades K–12 must be enrolled full-time with UTVA.

If there are more applications for admission in any grade than available openings in that grade, UTVA will conduct a lottery to determine which students will be admitted. When a vacancy occurs because a student has withdrawn from UTVA, UTVA may immediately enroll a new student from its list of applicants. Per Utah Code § 53G-6-502, some students receive admission preference, including siblings of a student who was previously or is currently enrolled at UTVA and a child of an employee of the school.

UTVA is an open-enrollment public charter school. Therefore, it is open to all eligible students on a space-available basis and does not discriminate in its admissions policies or practices based on race, color, national origin, creed, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, mental or physical disability, age, religion, ancestry, or athletic performance.

Utah Virtual Academy will begin enrolling students for the 2023–2024 school year as set forth below. UTVA will continually enroll until October 1 or until the charter’s cap of 2,050 is reached. Once either of those events occurs, the school will only fill seats that have been vacated throughout the year. Students on the waitlist will fill the vacated seats through a lottery selection.

• Enrollment for returning students: 1/23/2023
• Enrollment for new students: 1/23/2023

Following Utah Code 53G-6-503. Charter school students — Admissions procedures — Transfers requirements, UTVA will provide written notification to a student’s parent or legal guardian of an offer of admission. Once the parent or legal guardian received this offer, they will be required to submit written acceptance of the offer of admission. Then, written notification will be sent to the student’s current charter school or school district of residence, that an acceptance of admission of the student has been received.

A student can only be enrolled, full-time at one charter school or school district.

Because UTVA provides the lesson plans and materials needed for grades K–12, many parents find it easy to enroll multiple children in the program. We currently have families with as many as five children in the program being guided by one teaching adult in conjunction with the support of Utah Virtual Academy teachers.

UTVA is a public school, so there is no tuition. We provide Utah-licensed teachers and instructional materials. Students and families will be responsible for providing some common household materials (such as printer ink and paper). In addition, families are required to provide their own computers and internet access to participate in the program.

Utah Virtual Academy strives to provide an outstanding online education while keeping the cost to families to a minimum. Please note, any mandatory payment for student participation in a class, program, or activity is a fee and is subject to the fee waiver requirements. All students are responsible to pay for any loss, breakage, or damage they cause to school property. Such loss, breakage, or damage to school property is not subject to fee waiver requirements.

Utah Virtual Academy works with families to achieve a positive attendance record that meets the required 180 instructional days.

The school calendar includes school holidays or vacation time. Whenever possible, family vacations should align with school vacation days. Parents are encouraged to contact their student’s teacher if they plan a vacation that does not coordinate with the school calendar.

Kindergarten is offered as half-time. Students study language arts, math, and history.

To transfer a student on or before June 30, the parent or legal guardian must provide the school a notice of intent to enroll the student in the student’s school district of residence for the following year.

To transfer a student after June 30, a parent or legal guardian must submit a letter of acceptance for enrollment to UTVA. This letter of acceptance may be from the school district of residence, a nonresident school district, or a charter school.
